On a day dedicated to honoring a legacy of service, the spirit of community shone brightly at the Silver Spring Civic Building. This past Martin Luther King Jr. Day, KCM Cares was proud to join the Montgomery County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for their 13th annual MLK Day of Service. It was a day filled not with empty words, but with meaningful action, as volunteers of all ages came together to make a tangible difference for our neighbors in need.

Hands and Hearts United for a Common Cause

The heart of the event was a bustling assembly line, powered by the energy and enthusiasm of local youth and their families. With focused determination, these volunteers transformed tables of essential items into symbols of care and dignity. Each of the 400 care bags was packed with thoughtfulness, containing toiletries that provide comfort and support to those without a place to call home.

The bags were filled with a collection of necessities: lotion, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash, loofahs, washcloths, socks, toothpaste, toothbrushes, chapstick, bar soap, and deodorant. It was more than just an assembly line; it was a powerful demonstration of empathy in action, a reminder that even the smallest items can provide immense comfort to someone facing hardship.

A Partnership to Extend Our Reach

These 400 care packages are destined for individuals in our community experiencing homelessness, and they will be distributed through our trusted partner, Apryl Showers. For the past few months, KCM Cares has been proud to support the incredible work Apryl Showers does, and this joint effort on MLK Day further strengthens our shared commitment to serving the most vulnerable among us. This collaboration ensures that the care and effort put into each bag directly reaches those who need it most.

A Day of Diverse Opportunities to Serve

The care bag assembly was just one part of a larger, vibrant day of community engagement. The event, hosted by the dedicated women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., offered numerous ways for residents to get involved. Participants had the opportunity to donate blood at the Children’s National BLOOD MOBILE, contribute to a postage stamp drive supporting incarcerated women, and attend a health fair featuring free screenings and vital health information. It was a holistic approach to service, addressing multiple needs within our community and embodying the comprehensive spirit of Dr. King’s vision.

The Power of Coming Together

As the last care bag was packed and the final volunteer headed home, the impact of the day was clear. It was a heartwarming and powerful reminder that change happens when a community unites. The MLK Day of Service was more than just a one-day event; it was a reflection of the ongoing commitment that KCM Cares and our partners have to building a healthier, more equitable Montgomery County.

We are incredibly grateful to the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Apryl Showers, and every single volunteer who dedicated their time and energy. You have proven, once again, that small acts of service, when multiplied by many hands, can create a wave of positive change. Together, we will continue to build on this legacy of service, today and every day.
